Educators should meet the moment of any history to prepare students for the skills and understanding they need. Question is what is the purpose of education? Career-readiness for capitalist market skills? Habits and social skills? Learning about themselves and others? Self-discovery and expression?  Especially in this particular moment of history with disheartening abuses and questions of human rights coming up routinely, what do we owe to students of privileged and marginalized communities? I try to include a range of heritage, culture, gender/sexuality, race and family diversity especially representing marginalized communities.  Profile introduces Novice Mid>High learners to local culture and reviewing cognates and high frequency vocab with themes in identity, family and relationships, traditions, customs and food (great for pre-AP). Editable on Google Docs to add or reduce complexity. Contains footnotes and hyperlinks to explain cultural references. ~150 words. Anyone remember in teacher-ed college when many of us wrote philosophy statements or essays for a 'foundations' course? After years in my career and my coursework, I  decided to restate and refresh my purpose as an educator in a document that I revisit frequently and present to students/families at least once a term (actually after quarter breaks as well.) It serves to introduce and restate who I am as an educator and the 'why' of what I do, which serves as a good intro or reminder of the work and norms we do as a group and frames a welcoming, supportive and empathic context.
