Revisiting and Communicating your Educational Philosophy/Purpose

Anyone remember in teacher-ed college when many of us wrote philosophy statements or essays for a 'foundations' course? After years in my career and my coursework, I  decided to restate and refresh my purpose as an educator in a document that I revisit frequently and present to students/families at least once a term (actually after quarter breaks as well.) It serves to introduce and restate who I am as an educator and the 'why' of what I do, which serves as a good intro or reminder of the work and norms we do as a group and frames a welcoming, supportive and empathic context.  For Teachers starting the year: Learning about and respecting students' identities is an important part of building rapport and a safe environment. There are ways to signal this safety Age appropriate inquiry 1. Names/ nicknames/ preferred pronunciation 2. Last names (for states restricting free speech, names and pronouns) 2. Pronouns/ gender identity 3. Cultural identity/ language  4. Interests and hobbies 5. Career interests -What other information would you like me to know about you as a person or student? (safer phrasing if there are restrictions on inquiring appropriate information) Practices/Routines 1.
